Arizona monsoon season by year: Phoenix rainfall and dust storms

Arizona's monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30. Phoenix Sky Harbor averages 2.43 inches of rain in that window (1991 to 2020 normal). The last ten seasons ranged from 0.15 inches in 2023, the driest on record, to 4.20 inches in 2021. Maricopa County logged 3 to 15 dust storm days a season. Source: National Weather Service Phoenix.

TL;DR

The season is the same 108 days every year. The rain is not. Dry seasons still bring wind and dust, which is what moves tiles.

  • Season dates: June 15 to September 30, set by the National Weather Service in 2008
  • Normal Phoenix season rain: 2.43 inches (1991 to 2020 normal)
  • Wettest of the last ten: 2021, 4.20 inches. Driest: 2023, 0.15 inches, the driest on record
  • Three of the last ten seasons were under one inch at Sky Harbor, and 2020 landed at exactly one inch
  • Dust storm days in Maricopa County forecast zones ran from 3 (2020) to 15 (2022)
  • Most roof damage comes from the wind and dust in these storms, not the rain total

What this means for your roof

A dry season is not a safe season. 2023 had almost no rain and still produced the August 31 dust storm and the September 12 wind event that damaged roofs across the Phoenix area.

Outflow winds lift ridge and edge tiles, and dust packs into valleys and scuppers. The first hard rain then finds every gap.

The cheapest roof repair of the year happens in May, before the season starts.

How to read the numbers

Sky Harbor is one gauge. Your street can get twice its total or almost none in the same season.

The dust storm count is the number of days NWS Phoenix logged a dust storm somewhere in Maricopa County. A 2026 preliminary row is included from NOAA daily station data. The NWS season review for 2026 was not yet published as of November 5, 2026.

Questions people ask

When does monsoon season start and end in Arizona?

June 15 to September 30, every year. The National Weather Service set those fixed dates in 2008.

How much rain does Phoenix get during monsoon season?

The 1991 to 2020 normal at Sky Harbor is 2.43 inches. Real seasons swing hard: 0.15 inches in 2023 and 4.20 inches in 2021.

What was the driest monsoon on record in Phoenix?

2023, with 0.15 inches at Sky Harbor on only five rain days, per NWS Phoenix.

Does a dry monsoon mean less roof damage?

No. Wind and dust do most of the damage, and dry seasons still have both. 10X Roofing Advantage sees lifted ridge tiles and packed valleys in every season.

What should I check on my roof after a monsoon storm?

Slipped or missing tiles, lifted shingles, debris in valleys, standing water on flat roofs, and new stains inside. Our monsoon roof damage checklist walks through it.
