Hail and wind events in Maricopa County by year

The NOAA Storm Events Database logged 22 to 122 thunderstorm wind reports and 0 to 25 hail reports a year in Maricopa County from 2016 to 2025. The strongest measured gust was about 100 mph in 2022. The largest hail was 2.00 inches, also in 2022. Most reports fall in July and August. Compiled by 10X Roofing Advantage.

TL;DR

Wind is the everyday roof threat in Maricopa County. Hail is rarer but it does happen, and it does not need to be large to mark a foam or shingle roof.

  • Busiest wind years: 2022 (122 reports), 2018 (120) and 2021 (100)
  • Most hail reports: 2025 (25) and 2021 (19). 2017 had none
  • Strongest measured gust: about 100 mph in 2022. Several years topped 85 mph
  • Largest hail: 2.00 inches (2022). Hail of 1.75 inches fell in 2018, 2021 and 2025
  • A report is one logged observation, not one storm. One big storm can produce dozens

What this means for your roof

Monsoon outflow winds of 60 to 100 mph lift ridge tiles, rake tiles and shingle tabs. The tile may land back close to where it was and still leave the underlayment exposed.

Hail of one inch or more dents vents, cracks tile, and bruises shingle and foam coating. The marks are easy to miss from the ground.

After a storm, photograph the roof from the ground and inside the house, then have a roofer document it from the roof before anyone repairs it. The Arizona Department of Insurance advises calling your insurer before repairs begin.

How to read the numbers

A report is one logged observation at one place and time. 122 wind reports in 2022 does not mean 122 storms.

Many damaging gusts are never measured by an instrument, so the true peak winds were higher than the table shows. Dust storms are counted on our monsoon page, not here.

Questions people ask

How often does it hail in Phoenix?

The NOAA database logged between 0 and 25 hail reports a year in Maricopa County from 2016 to 2025. Most years had fewer than 15. Hail is uncommon here but not rare.

How strong are monsoon winds in Maricopa County?

Measured gusts of 75 to 90 mph show up most years in the NOAA records, and 2022 had a gust near 100 mph. Unmeasured gusts were likely higher.

Can small hail damage a roof?

Yes. Hail under one inch can bruise shingles and pit foam coating. 10X Roofing Advantage checks vents and flashing for dents, which are the easiest sign to confirm.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first after a storm?

The Arizona Department of Insurance advises contacting your insurer before repairs so they can evaluate the damage. A roofer can inspect and document at the same time.
