Phoenix 110-degree days by year, 2016 to 2025

Phoenix Sky Harbor hit 110 degrees or hotter on 70 days in 2024, the most on record, and on 55 days in 2023. The 1991 to 2020 normal is about 21 days a year. Every year from 2016 to 2025 had at least 22 such days. Source: National Weather Service Phoenix yearly climate summaries, compiled by 10X Roofing Advantage.

TL;DR

Roof materials are rated for heat, but not for this much of it, this often. The count of 110-degree days is the clearest number for how hard a Phoenix roof works.

  • 2024: 70 days at 110 or hotter, the record. 2023: 55 days. 2020: 53 days
  • Normal (1991 to 2020): about 21 days a year
  • 2023 also set the record streak: 30 straight days at 110 or hotter in July
  • 2025: 37 days, still well above normal
  • Roof surfaces run far hotter than the air. Heat dries out underlayment, sealant and foam coating years early

What this heat does to a roof

Tile and shingles take the sun. The felt underlayment under the tile, the pipe boots, and the sealant at flashing are what dry out and crack.

On a foam roof, the top coating is the only thing protecting the foam. More hot days means the coating chalks sooner.

A roof from 2004 has now lived through 2020, 2023 and 2024, the three years with the most 110-degree days on record. That is why a 20-year-old West Valley roof often needs new underlayment while its tile still looks new.

How to read the numbers

Sky Harbor is the official Phoenix station. Glendale, Peoria and Surprise run within a degree or two of it on most days.

The 2026 row is preliminary from NOAA daily data. NWS Phoenix publishes its yearly review in early January.

Questions people ask

How many 110-degree days did Phoenix have in 2024?

70, the most in Phoenix history, per the National Weather Service. The old record was 55 days in 2023.

What is a normal number of 110-degree days in Phoenix?

About 21 a year, based on the 1991 to 2020 normal period. Every year since 2016 has been above that.

Does heat really wear out a roof faster?

Yes. Heat dries out underlayment, pipe boots, sealant and foam coating. 10X Roofing Advantage finds brittle underlayment under tile that looks new on most 20-year-old West Valley roofs.

How hot does a roof get in Phoenix?

Roof surfaces run much hotter than the air temperature on a sunny day. The exact number depends on color and material, so we do not quote one.

When should I have a heat-stressed roof checked?

Before monsoon season, and any time the roof is older than 20 years and nobody has lifted a tile. The inspection is free.
